Rev. Dr. Joseph Patterson Expands Role with the UMFWPA

10/24/2019
Rev. Dr. Joseph Patterson joined the staff of the UM Foundation as Dean of the Laity Leadership Academy in September of 2018. His goal was to develop a certification program designed to produce more effective leadership for congregations throughout western Pennsylvania. Thanks to Joe’s efforts, the first class of the Laity Leadership Academy officially convened in 2019 and participants are already planning to continue their collaboration well beyond the scope of the program.

Now that the Laity Leadership Academy has been established, Joe will be taking on a larger role with the UM Foundation of western PA– leading the development and execution of all the Foundation’s educational programs and activities. A key aspect of the Foundation’s mission is to provide education and support in financial stewardship and leadership to the UM churches, individuals, and organizations of our conference. Joe will help the Foundation to execute this part of its mission in a way that will truly meet the needs of pastors, lay persons, and congregations alike.

For thirty-one years, Joe served as a local church pastor before becoming superintendent of the Erie-Meadville District in June of 2011. He has served churches large and small, urban and suburban, struggling and established, and gained the trust and admiration of those around him in the process. Rev. Beth Nelson, chair of the Foundation’s Program Committee, says “we are grateful to see Joe in this expanding role at the Foundation. He has been diligent and passionate about creating the Laity Academy for Stewardship Formation.  Joe has a pastor’s heart and a great commitment to equip healthy disciples.  Joe is graciously teaching generosity and stewardship as core qualities and challenging us to find new expressions in a fast-changing world.”

Another important aspect of Joe’s expanded role with the Foundation will be to network and collaborate with Western PA Conference staff and leadership. Together, we will be able to work through existing and new systems to equip the steward leaders of tomorrow. The Foundation is blessed to have Joe as a member of the team and looks forward to all he will accomplish in his new role!
