Tax Seminar Held for Area Clergy (Posted 2/4/10))
Two dozen clergy and spouses attended the Foundation’s Clergy Tax Seminar at Dutilh UMC on February 3. The Rev. Fred Leasure, the leader for this year's seminar, addressed many specific concerns throughout the session. Topics included updates to the tax laws for 2009 returns, forms W-2 and 1099, the clergy housing allowance, credits and deductions, self employment tax, and fair rental value of housing.

The idiosyncrasy of tax laws applicable to clergy makes it important to understand the bases used by the various taxing authorities. Over the years, this annual seminar has helped many clergy and their families prepare their annual returns. If you missed the seminar this year, and whether you prepare your own returns, file electronically, or use a professional service, please consider joining us in the future.

In recent years we have witnessed an ever-increasing number of applications for Foundation grants. To allow our grants committee to make a thorough evaluation of each application, we are advancing the deadline for submittal from the end of April to the last Friday in March, which in 2010 will be on March 26. Grant recipients will continue to be announced at the end of May.

While preparing your 2010 submittal, pay close attention to the guidelines found in the Grant Application Packet. Our grants committee is committed to awarding the maximum amount of $5000 to outstanding project proposals that carefully follow the guidelines, demonstrate creativity, and have sought significant support from additional sources.
